Master students in Applied Media Studies carry out a media literacy community-based learning project
Lecturer: Eddie Brennan
As part of the MA in Applied Media Studies students participated in a community-based learning project in media literacy.
In 2009/10 this community-based learning project in media literacy was carried out over a period of twelve weeks. Over the twelve weeks DIT students (in pairs) delivered a module on topics of media literacy to students taking part on a FETAC (The Further Education and Training Awards Council) Level 5 course in the Digital Hub. The Digital Hub is located in Dublin’s city centre and is a centre for knowledge, innovation and creativity focused on digital content and technology enterprises.
Following the taught module all the students (DIT and Digital Hub) worked together to create two magazine programmes on media literacy topics. The programmers were produced with the cooperation of Dublin Community Television in May 2010.
What do the students get from it?
Students gained a firmer, more balanced and more nuanced appreciation of the media theory that they had covered in earlier modules. They also learned about the high level of media literacy knowledge among community learners, as well as insight into how this can be developed.
What does the community get from it?
Community learners availed of an opportunity to formalise and expand their existing knowledge of the media. The module also provided an opportunity to explore and express concerns within the community.
