Information for Students
Have you got an idea for a project That might progress the work of a community group? Have you got a connection with a community group, and an idea for how you and your fellow-students could work with them and gain course credits? Have you thought about how your skills could be relevant to underserved communities, And how much you could learn from them about the role of your future profession in society?
If you are in the early years of your study, you should talk to your lecturers about your ideas. They may already have a community-based learning project up and running, or they may have an idea that you could help them to develop. If you're coming to the end of your studies, particularly in your final year, you’ll be in a better position to choose your own thesis or project topic, and you might like to consider working in collaboration with an underserved community group.
As a first step you might like to browse our list of community research topics from community partners. Talk to your project supervisor for advice, and/or contact us for support. We look forward to working with you.
As a student learning with communities, you're more likely to retain what you have learned on your course by applying it to real-life projects, as well as deepening your learning generally. You're more likely to be an attractive potential employee because of this relevant practical experience and a range of professional transferable skills, including time management, project management, communications and presentation skills, as well as problem-solving and critical thinking skills. You are also more likely to enjoy your college experience, and who knows where the links you make in the community will take you?
If you're not a final year student, but are actively involved in a leadership role in extra-curricular or co-curricular activities, you might like to gain academic credits and build your professional skills portfolio through another route - the DIT LEAD module. You can find information on the LEAD module website here.
