Product Design students design a fun communications toy for the Central Remedial Clinic School, Scoil Mochua.
Lecturer: Carmel Rooney
As part of the B. Eng. Tech Degree in Engineering Systems (DT001) 1st year students taking the Communication Module worked with Scoil Mochua Central Remedial Clinic in Clondalkin, West Dublin to research and provide a poster design of a simple communication toy/device suitable for use by Scoil Muchua pupils who have learning and physical disabilities.
During the project the students had two site visits to the school, becoming familiar with the environment and also the pupils attending the school. They worked on teams of 3 or 4 and at the end of the project were required to pitch their design idea to their peers and to DIT and Scoil Mochua teaching staff, out in the school. This provided an opportunity for the students to be effective in oral and written communication skills in a professional environment as a product designer.
What do the students get from it?
The project encouraged motivation, lateral thinking, effective team work and a recognition in the students of the need to acquire effective written and oral communication skills for a professional environment.
What do the community get from it?
The project fostered a very positive relationship, integration and understanding between the students in DIT and the students and staff in Scoil Mochua. This is essential as the basis for future collaborative work.
