Frequently Asked Questions

What supports will be available to me after I register as a student?
The support offered by Access Service staff to each Access Student incorporates academic, financial, social initiatives. Activities and supports organised include an orientation programme, financial support, a peer mentoring programme, extra tuition, and social events amongst others. The Access Service team also works in co-operation with the other DIT student support services office by referring students to a particular staff member, group or individual service, dependant on their needs.
How much time will I have to commit to Access-related programmes?
During the first year, all Access Students are required to attend a week-long orientation programme. This is a great opportunity to meet other students and to get a head-start on becoming familiar with DIT. After lectures begin, 1st years are required to attend group meetings with their Peer Mentor. Further, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students are requested to volunteer as Peer Mentors for new 1st year students each year. Other events, such as social outings for Access Students, are on offer throughout the year.
Are additional grants available from the Access Service?
All Access students receive a grant each year as they progress towards a certificate or a degree. Additional funding is available for eligible candidates from the Student Assistance Fund and other schemes. Further, students are encouraged to apply to their respective County Council/VEC schemes for third-level funding.
Where is the Access Service located?
The Access Service is based at 23 Mountjoy Square, but staff members do hold regular office hours with students in each of the DIT college locations.
